4.7 from 53 reviews

This Crockpot Mashed Sweet Potatoes recipe combines tender slow-cooked sweet potatoes with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for a creamy, flavorful side dish perfect for any meal. The slow cooker method makes it an effortless dish to prepare, delivering sweet, buttery, and warmly spiced mashed potatoes with minimal hands-on time.

Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potatoes

  • 3 lb sweet potatoes

Seasonings and Mix-ins

  • ½ cup butter (8 tablespoons or 1 stick)
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into large chunks to ensure even cooking and easier mashing later.
  2. Layer Ingredients in Crockpot: Place two-thirds of the sweet potato chunks into the crockpot. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon, salt, brown sugar, and half the butter over the potatoes evenly.
  3. Add Remaining Potatoes and Seasonings: Top with the remaining one-third of the sweet potatoes, then add the rest of the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt on top to distribute flavors throughout.
  4. Cook Low and Slow: Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 6 hours. This slow cooking softens the sweet potatoes perfectly and allows the flavors to meld.
  5. Mash and Serve: When cooking is complete, remove the lid and mash the sweet potatoes directly in the crockpot until creamy and well combined with the butter and sugar mixture.

Notes

  • Do not use a slow cooker liner for this recipe, as it may tear during the mashing process. Instead, lightly coat the crockpot insert with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
  • This recipe originally included more cinnamon, but it was adjusted based on feedback; if you prefer a stronger cinnamon flavor, feel free to double the amount.
